Always talk with your healthcare professional before starting a new exercise program. This is especially important if you have had recent surgery, joint pain, heart disease, or any other health condition.
Balance exercises for over 70 aren’t complicated — but they matter more than most people realize. Balance after 70 is one of those things you probably don’t think about — until the moment it matters. You reach for something on a high shelf and catch yourself grabbing the counter. Or step off a curb in the dark and your heart jumps. You stand up too fast and the room tilts for a second.
But these aren’t signs that something is terribly wrong. They’re signs that your balance system is changing — and that it’s worth paying attention to.
The CDC has clear data on this. More than one in four adults over 65 fall at least once a year. That risk goes up with age. However, declining balance isn’t something you simply have to accept. A growing body of research suggests that targeted balance training can meaningfully improve stability. This holds true even for adults well into their 70s, 80s, and beyond.
This guide explains what changes in your balance system after 70, and which exercises have the strongest evidence behind them.
